Choose Jira if
Jira fits software teams that plan sprints from a backlog, want code commits and pull requests visible on the board, and want all six views and reports on the free plan.
Choose ClickUp if
ClickUp fits teams that want tasks, Docs, Chat and time tracking in one product and unlimited members on the free plan, where Chat and time tracking stay trials until ClickUp's first paid plan (Unlimited or Core, depending on which version of the pricing page you see).

The main difference
Atlassian's features page presents Jira's project management features and describes Jira as the place where developers, marketers and other teams get work done, with templates from agile sprints to marketing campaigns. Its scrum boards are organized around sprints and a prioritized backlog. ClickUp's Gantt page describes a single, converged app for tasks, Docs, Chat, Calendar, Dashboards and more, and its views page adds Whiteboards and many other views.
If your team plans in sprints from a backlog and wants code activity next to its work, Jira is built around that. If you want documents, chat and tasks in one tool for several departments, ClickUp includes all three.
How each organizes work
Jira tracks work items inside spaces, which Atlassian describes as flexible containers for a time-boxed project, a team or a topic. Each work item moves through a workflow you can customize, and every plan includes custom fields and forms.
ClickUp's help center describes a Workspace that contains your whole organization, Spaces for departments, teams or clients, optional Folders that can hold Subfolders, and Lists that hold the tasks for one project or goal. Free Forever caps Spaces at 5.
Planning, sprints and timelines
- Jira: Atlassian describes a sprint as a time-boxed period, typically two weeks, and the backlog as a prioritized list of work for the development team. Boards use burndown and velocity reports, and the scrum page says teams can also see code commits, branches, pull requests and deployment status on a Jira board. Premium adds capacity management and scenario modeling.
- ClickUp: the help center says dependency relationships are available on all plans, and its scheduling availability article lists Reschedule Dependencies on every plan, so waiting tasks move when a blocking task's dates change. The Gantt page lists four dependency types.
- ClickUp Critical Path and Slack Time: the pricing table leaves them out of Free Forever, lists them as a trial on the plan above it and includes them from Business, while the Gantt FAQ says Critical Path works without upgrading. Confirm in your own Workspace.
Plans and limits to check
We do not publish prices because they change. Check Atlassian's and ClickUp's pricing pages for current numbers. ClickUp's pricing page shows visitors one of two versions, with different plan names and some different limits, so note which one you see.
- Team size on free: Jira Free stops at 10 users, and adding an eleventh moves the site to a 7-day Standard trial. ClickUp Free Forever has no member cap, but trial features count uses that never reset.
- Automation at scale: Jira's paid allowances grow with headcount, so a 10-person Standard team has 4,000 steps a month. ClickUp's are per Workspace, so the 1,000 on its lowest paid tier is shared however many people you add. Jira counts steps and ClickUp counts executions or actions, so the units are not identical.
- Email on Jira Free: up to 100 emails a day across the site, notifications and automation combined. Paid plans remove the cap.
- AI: Rovo Search, Chat and Agents are on Jira's paid plans, not Free. ClickUp's AI usage terms differ between the two versions of its pricing page.
Where Jira is stronger
- All six views, including Backlog and Timeline, plus reports, are on the Free plan, where ClickUp's dashboards are a trial.
- Code commits, branches and pull requests can appear next to work on the board.
- Automation allowances on paid plans scale per user.
- Atlassian's features page says over 3,000 integrations are available in the Atlassian Marketplace.
Where ClickUp is stronger
- Docs, Chat and Whiteboards are part of the same product; in the Atlassian lineup, documents live in Confluence.
- Free Forever lists unlimited free plan members.
- More view types, such as Gantt, Workload and Mind Map, at the tiers shown in the table.
How to decide
Run one real piece of work in each tool. In Jira, pick a template that matches how your team works and run one sprint or one week of work. In ClickUp, build one Space with a few Lists, add a Doc, and test Gantt and time tracking on purpose, since trial uses on the free plan do not reset.
If engineering will own the tool and wants backlogs, sprints and code activity in one place, Jira is the closer fit. If several departments need one workspace with docs and chat, ClickUp covers that without a second product.
Common questions
Is Jira only for software teams?
No. Atlassian's features page describes Jira as a tool for developers, marketers and every team in between, with templates from agile sprints to marketing campaigns. Its scrum page describes the backlog as a prioritized list of work for the development team.
Does ClickUp support sprints?
Yes. ClickUp lists Sprint Management on Free Forever, with Sprint Points included from Business. Jira's scrum boards are built around sprints and a prioritized backlog.
Which free plan allows more users?
ClickUp's Free Forever plan lists unlimited free plan members. Jira's Free plan is for up to 10 users.
Does Jira include docs like ClickUp?
Jira's pricing page does not list a docs feature. Jira's Docs feature connects a space to Confluence, which Atlassian sells as a separate product and bundles with Jira, Loom and Rovo in Teamwork Collection. ClickUp includes collaborative Docs on every plan.
