PRACTICAL GUIDE

Free Gantt chart software: which tools include a Gantt on the free plan

A free Gantt chart can mean a full view with user caps, a view metered by uses, or only a trial. This guide sorts eight tools by what their free plans include.

What counts as free here

Many tools advertise a free Gantt chart. On their pricing pages, that means one of three things:

  • A Gantt or timeline view on a free plan with no use limit, but with caps on users, projects or features.
  • A Gantt view on a free plan that is metered by uses. ClickUp works this way: its help center gives the Free Forever plan 60 uses of Gantt view, both versions of its pricing page label Gantt on that plan a trial, and its pricing FAQ says uses do not reset.
  • No Gantt on the free plan at all, with a free trial of a paid plan instead.

This guide sorts eight tools reviewed on this site into those groups. Every fact comes from the vendors' pricing pages and help centers, checked on 19 October 2026. We have not tested these tools hands-on.

What to check in a free Gantt

  • Dependency types. Finish-to-start covers most plans. If tasks overlap, you need start-to-start or finish-to-finish links, which some free plans leave out.
  • Automatic rescheduling. When an early task slips, dependent tasks should move with it.
  • Critical path and baselines. These are the features most often held back for paid plans.
  • User and project caps. A free Gantt for 5 users and 3 projects suits a small team, not a department.
  • Use limits. A metered free plan is a trial in practice. Once you reach the limit, you keep your data but cannot keep editing in that view.

Free plans with a Gantt or timeline view

Three of these free plans have no use count on the view itself. ClickUp's is metered by uses. ClickUp is our commercial partner and is listed first.

  • ClickUp. Its help center limits Gantt view on Free Forever to 60 uses, and Timeline and Workload views are also metered there. ClickUp's Gantt page says you can set dependencies, drag tasks and turn on Critical Path without upgrading, and it documents all four dependency types. Its pricing table disagrees on Critical Path & Slack Time: not included on Free Forever, a trial on the first paid plan (Unlimited or Core, depending on which version of the pricing page you see), and included from Business. Gantt is unlimited from the first paid plan. ClickUp's help center lists baselines from Business, and one version of the pricing page lists Gantt Chart PDFs from Business. Free Forever has unlimited members and 60 MB of storage.
  • Zoho Projects. Gantt charts are listed on every plan, including Free, which covers up to 5 users and 3 projects. Free allows finish-to-start dependencies within a project. All four dependency types start on Premium, and critical path and baselines from Enterprise.
  • Teamwork.com. Gantt, Table, List and Board views, with dependencies and milestones, are on every plan, including Free. Free is limited to 5 users, 5 projects, 100 MB of storage and 100 automations. Filtering in Gantt view starts on Basics and critical paths on Accelerate.
  • Jira. Jira calls its schedule view a Timeline. The Free plan includes Timeline view for up to 10 users, with dependencies inside a single project or space. Cross-project dependency management and advanced planning start on Premium.

Notion also has a timeline view, but its pricing page and help center do not say which plans include it, so it is not sorted here.

Tools where the Gantt view needs a paid plan

  • monday.com. Its help center says the Gantt view is available on Standard and up, and that milestones and critical path need Pro or Enterprise. Dependencies are also on Pro, and its Gantt Baseline article lists baselines on Pro and Enterprise. The Free plan covers 2 seats, 3 boards and 3 Docs.
  • Asana. Timeline and Gantt views with task dependencies start on Starter. The free Personal plan lists list, board and calendar views.
  • Wrike. Interactive Gantt charts start on Team. The Free plan lists Board and Table views. Wrike's help center lists critical path on Business, Pinnacle and Apex, and its plan comparison lists baseline tracking from Business.
  • Smartsheet. It has not offered a free plan to new signups since 28 August 2024, although existing Free plans continue; the pricing page offers 30 days free. Gantt view, dependencies and critical path are included from Pro, and baselines from Business.

Free plan limits beyond the Gantt view

The Gantt view is rarely the first limit a team reaches on a free plan. Check these as well:

  • ClickUp Free Forever. 60 MB of storage, and Gantt, Timeline and Workload views counted in uses. Guests are free but always have full create and edit permissions on what you share with them; permission controls start on paid plans.
  • Zoho Projects Free. 5 GB of storage and 3 projects. iOS and Android apps are included.
  • Teamwork.com Free. 100 MB of storage, 2 project templates and 100 automations. Client users, who can be invited into projects, start on Basics.
  • Jira Free. 2 GB of storage and up to 100 emails a day across the site, counting notifications and automation together. Every user is an admin, and free guest access and space permissions start on Standard.

If several outside people need to view the schedule, these rules matter as much as the Gantt itself. A paid plan with free viewers or guests can cost less than it first appears.

Trial uses compared with a free plan

ClickUp's model needs a closer look because it sits between free and paid. Its pricing FAQ says uses demonstrate paid features, are cumulative across a Workspace and do not reset. When you reach a limit you do not lose data, but you cannot create or edit items with that feature.

In practice, 60 uses of Gantt view let you evaluate the view, not run a long project in it. Zoho Projects, Teamwork.com and Jira have no use count on their free Gantt or Timeline, but cap users and projects instead. If you need a Gantt every day for the foreseeable future, compare those caps with the paid entry plans of ClickUp, monday.com, Asana, Wrike and Smartsheet.

How to test a free Gantt before you commit

  • Rebuild one real schedule with at least 20 tasks and a few dependencies.
  • Move an early task and check that dependent tasks shift as expected.
  • Check which dependency types the free plan allows, and whether a critical path appears.
  • Export or print the chart, if stakeholders expect a PDF. ClickUp's Gantt page describes PDF and image export, and one version of its pricing page lists Gantt Chart PDFs from Business, so check the export on the plan you would buy.
  • On ClickUp, decide in advance what you will test, so the 60 uses go on the questions that matter.
  • Write down the limit you hit first: users, projects, uses or a missing feature. That limit tells you which paid plan to price.

When it is worth paying

Pay when the schedule drives decisions: when you report variance against a baseline, need the critical path to manage a deadline, or have more people or projects than a free plan allows. We do not publish prices because they change; check each vendor's pricing page for current numbers. As a guide to where the features start: baselines on ClickUp Business (per its help center), Smartsheet Business, Wrike Business, Zoho Projects Enterprise and monday.com Pro; critical path on ClickUp Business (a trial on its first paid plan), Smartsheet Pro, Teamwork.com Accelerate, Wrike Business and monday.com Pro.

Trial terms differ: Smartsheet lists 30 days, Zoho Projects 15 days, Wrike, Teamwork.com and monday.com (on Pro) 14 days, and Jira 7 days on Standard and Premium.

Common questions

Which project management tools have a free Gantt chart?

Of the tools covered here, Zoho Projects and Teamwork.com list Gantt charts on their free plans, Jira includes Timeline view on Free, and ClickUp's help center gives its Free Forever plan 60 uses of Gantt view. monday.com, Asana and Wrike need a paid plan for Gantt, and Smartsheet offers new signups only a trial.

Is ClickUp's Gantt chart free?

Partly. ClickUp's help center gives the Free Forever plan 60 uses of Gantt view, and its pricing FAQ says uses are cumulative and do not reset. Gantt is unlimited from the first paid plan (Unlimited or Core, depending on which version of the pricing page you see). Critical path is listed as a trial on that plan. ClickUp's help center lists baselines from Business, and one version of the pricing page lists Gantt Chart PDFs from Business.

Do free Gantt charts include a critical path?

Usually not. Zoho Projects lists critical path from Enterprise, Teamwork.com from Accelerate, Wrike from Business and monday.com on Pro and Enterprise. ClickUp's Gantt page says Critical Path works without upgrading, while its pricing table lists it from Business with a trial on the first paid plan.

Is a timeline the same as a Gantt chart?

Not always. Some tools use the two names for different views. ClickUp and monday.com offer both, Jira uses Timeline for its dependency-aware schedule view, and Asana lists Timeline and Gantt views together on Starter. Check whether the view supports dependencies before you rely on it.
